Fort Widley
The fort was one of five built on top of Portsdown Hill between 1860 and 1868 to protect Portsmouth from possible French attack.
The then prime minister Lord Henry Palmerston ordered for the fort to be built as part of ‘Palmerston's Folly’ - a civil defence across the hill built in 1861 to defend the city from sea and land attack.
After this, the fort was used as a transit depot during the First World War, before being modified during the Second World War to provide more accommodation.
Then in 1952 the Victorian fort became home to a bomb disposal squadron and a year later an emergency control was constructed in the fort's magazine.
The huge brick structure is surrounded by a dry moat that featured mortar batteries in case anyone tried to enter. These are accessed from the fort’s tunnels, which are said to be where most of the ghost sightings are reported.
Some of the most famous paranormal stories at the fort include: a whistling sergeant-major, bangings and footsteps heard from a former prisoner and a little drummer boy who was once pursued by an officer and then fell to his death down the spiral staircase.
